This journey through the Philippines takes you off the beaten path. We’ll explore rarely visited islands, jungles, mangrove forests, and coral reefs where tourists rarely go.

Most of our time will be spent in the water: snorkeling on vibrant reefs, kayaking through rivers and lagoons, swimming with sea turtles, and going on safari in search of whale sharks. Waterfalls, caves, nighttime kayaking among fireflies, and one of the most beautiful underwater worlds in Asia await us.

The route spans several islands: Negros, Bohol, Cebu, Samar, and Leyte. We’ll travel by boat, ferry, and minivan.

The concept
The Philippines fully reopened to tourism after the pandemic (it took them a while to get back on their feet), and at the same time, the entire Chinese population started traveling again. So places like the Chocolate Hills, El Nido, Coron, or Puerto Princesa are best avoided.

We’ll be traveling off the beaten path — and the route will be even more interesting. We’ll experience everything the Philippines has to offer: islands, underwater life, mangrove forests, jungles, and even a 43‑hectare nature reserve all to ourselves. We’ll touch on some classics along the way, but only because they’re truly worth it and happen to be on our route.

You’ll be spending a lot of time in the water. A LOT. Water will be everywhere — warm and pleasant. In the air, beneath your feet, on your skin. Constantly. Sometimes with a mask, sometimes under a waterfall, sometimes in a river.
Negros Occidental
Our first part begins in Western Negros. A little-visited and underrated island, it lies off the main tourist trail because few know how to fit it into a limited travel schedule. Negros is our point of arrival. From there, we’ll move for a few days to a practically uninhabited island where only scientists live. The former owners wanted to sell it for logging, but it was bought by philanthropists who insisted on keeping it untouched. And so it happened. Now this island is a nature reserve that welcomes rare visitors, showing them sea turtles, sharks, beautiful coral reefs, mangroves, bat caves, and countless birds.
Nighttime kayaking on a river lit by fireflies
We’ll hop into kayaks and glide along a tranquil river, weaving through jungles and mangroves in search of fireflies. No engine noise — just the silence of the night and the smooth surface of the water. Of course, we’ll need a bit of luck with the weather — fireflies don’t like rain or wind. But if we see them (so far, we’ve seen them every time), it will be on par with the awe and beauty of the northern lights.
Caves of the Eastern Visayas Islands
There will be many caves, as many islands are literally made of limestone — perfect for cave wonders. They’ll come in all forms — dry, with rivers inside, with wildlife, without. But every single one will have an incredible number of stalactites. In some caves we’ll need to crawl a bit; in others, we’ll walk easily and freely.
We'll fly on a torpedo boat
At some point, the Filipinos got bored and came up with a fantastic activity: rafting on a motorized wooden boat down a river with rapids. Up front, someone with a paddle steers the boat; in the middle, the second person’s job is to bail out water; and at the stern, the third controls the motor. We sit in the middle and scream.
Trekking through the green islands
We won’t be doing too much walking, and the distances won’t be huge — we’ll mostly be on the water. Still, we’ll do some hiking in a few places. The physical activity will be varied.\
Deserted water adventures
Jumping in, getting soaked, making your way through stunning boulders and turquoise water — there’ll be plenty of that! We’ll be wet almost all the time (from the moment we step off the plane).
Whale shark safari
ATTENTION! This is not the pop adventure in Oslob, where the whale sharks are fed and you get to touch them. We’ll go searching for sharks in the open sea — this isn’t a circus show; it’s a chance to see these animals in their natural habitat. There’s also a chance that, for whatever reason, we might not see them. It’s all up to nature. Even if we don’t find them, right next to where we’re staying there’s an incredible coral reef — you can just walk out of the hotel and dive in.
Accommodation
We stay in the most comfortable accommodations possible for the chosen locations. Rooms are twin/double. Single occupancy must be requested separately. The hotels vary, but the standard is good (in my opinion — the best the islands have to offer). I try to make sure everyone gets similar rooms, but sometimes that’s not always possible — please be understanding.
DAY BY DAY
Manila
We depart a day in advance, meaning October 31st. We arrive in Manila, spend the night, and the next day we immediately head out to the islands.
Negros Occidental
We’ll stay near the airport so we can catch an early morning flight to Negros and reach our sparsely inhabited island as early as possible. We’ll be staying inside a nature reserve with one of the most beautiful reefs in the Philippines. Most likely, there will be no one else on the island. We’ll check in early and take it easy after the flight. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners on the island are included.
Negros Occidental
A full day on the island. We’ll swim a lot, kayak through the coves, and listen to tropical birds — as well as the otherworldly sounds of Tokay geckos. Manta Reef is one of the most beautiful reefs I’ve ever swum on. You can spot turtles, sometimes baby sharks, but most importantly, the reef is completely healthy and intact! We’ll take a walk around the island, explore the lagoons, and visit a bat cave.
Negros Oriental
In the morning, we’ll head to a nearby island where we’ll snorkel near a real sunken ship and also see a coral reef that drops off into the abyss. Later, we’ll transfer to the eastern part of Negros and check into one of the most charming hotels, located on the shore of a beautiful black volcanic sand beach.
Negros Oriental
Right after breakfast, we set off for Apo Island. A reef of incredible beauty and a huge number of turtles! We’ll swim, have lunch, then swim some more. One of the most stunning underwater days. We’ll return to our hotel and relax.
Negros - Bohol
We leave early in the morning. Today we have a ferry to Bohol, but there are important things to do first. We’ll pack up and head toward the ferry, but along the way we’ll stop at a stunning location and visit a powerful waterfall in a beautiful green canyon. Wet and happy, we’ll head back, dry off, and go to the ferry. Two hours on the ferry and we’re in Bohol — immediately off to our next activity. The kayak team (with lunch) will be waiting for us. After a short briefing, we’ll launch onto the river and paddle off in search of fireflies. An unforgettable sight! We’ll return to a beautiful hotel and have dinner. What a day!
Bohol - Cebu
We need to cross over to Cebu. But this day is more than just a transfer — even though we’ll leave early in the morning. An hour and a half later, we’ll be on another island with new vehicles waiting for us. Today, we’ll explore beautiful, little-known canyons, go swimming, and check in early by the sea. We’ll need plenty of rest for the day ahead.
Cebu
You’ve never woken up this early. We need to be the first ones at the canyon so that no one else is there — that’s absolutely critical. The canyon will be so breathtakingly beautiful that words can’t describe it — but the best part is, we’ll have it all to ourselves!! After making our way through the canyon, we’ll have lunch and then go swimming with massive schools of sardines. And that’s not all! On our way back to Cebu, we’ll stop at an incredibly scenic viewpoint with a mind-blowing sunset.
Cebu - Ormoc - Tacloban
In the morning, we take a ferry to Leyte — an island you’ll find almost no information about anywhere, despite its incredible beauty. I’d call it the Switzerland of the Philippines: clean, well-kept, and charming. Along the way, we’ll see plenty of scenery, visit a local market, but the day will be mostly about the journey. A very comfortable hotel by the shore awaits us.
Samar
Today we head to a nearby island, where we’ll visit incredible caves, see beautiful rivers, and wide waterfalls. I’m thrilled that encountering foreigners on this island is a rare occurrence. The day will be incredibly packed. In the morning, kayaking — and in the afternoon, torpedo boats!
Leyte
On Leyte, there are some very interesting places to explore that few people know about. We’ll make our way toward Sogod Bay and take a walk along the way. Upon arrival in Sogod, we’ll snorkel on the house reef. We’ll be staying in a stunning hotel for two nights!
Leyte
Another early wake-up call — today is the whale sharks! We can’t guarantee them, but we’ll do our best to find them. This is not the kind of attraction where the sharks are fed and people get to pet them — this is about wild sharks living their own shark lives. Fingers crossed we’ll find them!
Leyte - Manila
We leave early in the morning for Tacloban and wait for our flight to Manila. Thank you, Philippines — and see you again!
