A quick guide to money in Kyrgyzstan:
Currency:The local currency is the Som. Rubles and US dollars are not accepted in regular shops (only sometimes in souvenir markets).
If you bring US dollars, make sure they are new-style bills — old or wrinkled notes may be refused at exchange offices.
Cards:Russian Visa/MasterCard cards don’t always work due to sanctions. Even in major supermarkets in Bishkek or hotels near Issyk-Kul, paying with a Russian card can be hit or miss.
Bottom line: Don't rely solely on plastic.
ATMs & exchange offices:In Bishkek and around the Issyk-Kul coast, currency exchange is easy — many exchange offices work 24/7.
In remote areas (like Son-Kul, Tash-Rabat, or high-mountain valleys), there are no exchange facilities at all.
How much to bring (average prices):- Lunch at a cafe: 500–800 som (roughly equivalent to rubles in number)
- Groceries (fruit, bread, water): quite affordable
- Souvenirs: can often be paid in soms, dollars, or even rubles
- Tours and transfers: usually cheaper to pay in cash (USD or soms)
To sum it up:Plan for about 70–80% of your expenses to be paid in cash. It's best to bring US dollars and exchange them for soms upon arrival in Bishkek or at your destination. For trips to the mountains, carry enough soms in cash — with a little extra just in case.
